How we rate

Every product gets a number between 0 and 100. It is put together from four parts, and each part is measured, not estimated.

1. Ingredients — 30 points

Each ingredient in the list is rated from 0 to 10 on its own. A whole food such as oat flakes scores high, an isolate or a refined oil scores low. The order matters: what is listed first makes up most of the product. Ingredients rated 3 or lower are marked in yellow on the product page, so you can see at a glance what pulls the score down.

2. Additives — 15 points

Flavourings, colours, sweeteners, thickeners, preservatives. We look at what the additive does to the product and at the evidence behind it, not at whether it is legal — almost everything on a shelf is legal.

3. Processing — 15 points

How far the food has been taken from the raw ingredient: cut, cooked, extruded, reassembled from fractions. This follows the idea behind the NOVA classification.

4. Nutrition — 40 points

Sugar, salt, fibre, saturated fat and protein per 100 g, judged against what the product is supposed to be. Bread is compared with bread, oil with oil — never bread with oil.

What we do not do

Found a mistake?

Every product page has a "report" button at the bottom. Reports land in our queue and are checked by hand. That is the fastest way to fix a wrong ingredient list.
