Root Index rates packaged food by what is actually in it: the ingredient list, the additives, how far the food has been processed, and the nutrition table. No sponsors, no brand deals, no paid placements.

One number out of 100, from four parts
30Ingredients — every single one is rated, from whole food to isolate
15Additives — flavourings, colours, sweeteners, preservatives
15Processing — how far it has been taken from the raw food
40Nutrition — sugar, salt, fibre, fat, protein per 100 g

Why the score is not a health claim

A high score means a clean, recognisable composition. It does not promise that a food is healthy for you, and a low score does not make it dangerous. Portion size, the rest of your day and your own situation decide that — not a label and not us.

Where the data comes from

Product data comes from open sources such as Open Food Facts, from manufacturer label portals, and from the German nutrient database (BLS). Every product page names its source and the date it was read. If something is wrong, there is a button on each page to report it.

Currently in German

The database holds more than 56,000 products sold in German-speaking countries, and the product pages are written in German. Your browser will offer to translate them, and ingredient names are close enough between the languages that this works well. English product pages will follow if there is demand for them.

Who is behind it

Root Index is a private project from Germany, built by two people. There is no advertising on this site and no sponsored ranking. If a brand ever pays us, that sentence changes.

We rate what is in the product, not what the advertising says. No medical or nutritional advice. · Deutsche Seite · How we rate · Product directory (German)
